The five finalists in the contest to determine this year’s Ann Arbor Youth Poet Laureate perform their poetry. Over the last few months, Neutral Zone accepted submissions from young poets, rappers, leaders and activists. The finalists were chosen from among the applicants by a panel of local poets. The finalists are: Dylan Gilbert (Pioneer), Sam Kass (Pioneer), Zaphra Stupple (Pioneer), Julia Bohm (Greenhills), and Miela Foster (Huron).
The winner of the Poet Laureate competition will be announced after the performance. The event will be held at the downtown Ann Arbor District Library. It is free and open to the public.
The Ann Arbor Youth Poet Laureate is a collaborative program with Urban Word NYC, Neutral Zone, Penmanship Books, the Academy of American Poets, Poetry Society of America and Cave Canem. The local competition was supported by Ann Arbor State Bank. The winner receives a contract to have a debut collection of poems published by Penmanship Books and Red Beard Press.
