2018 Summer Programs

Our summer programs run from June 25th to August 18th. They offer a week-long opportunity to dive into the most popular NZ programs we have to offer.   Click on the “+” sign below for a particular camp description.

VOLUME Summer Institute for Writers, June 25- 29

June 25-29, 9:00am-4:30pm. Optional Lock-In at Neutral Zone, June 28th, 6pm – June 29th, 10am  COST: $295.

This nationally acclaimed week-long institute brings professional performance poets and prose writers to the Neutral Zone to teach teens interested in developing writing skills and connecting to the local literary arts scene. Participants will attend daily poetry or prose workshops in a relaxed and encouraging environment. There will be an overnight Lock-In at Neutral Zone on 6/28  after a reading featuring the instructors the evening of, and a culminating performance by teen participants the evening of 6/29. All experience levels welcome. Please bring a sack lunch, light snacks will be provided.


Video Production 101, June 25-29

June 25-29, 9am-12:30pm, COST: $225

Learn how to record, edit and produce videos in one week using a Canon 70D (DSLR), GoPro and edit with Final Cut Pro X. Incorporate time-lapse, stop motion and scenes from around Ann Arbor into your videos. We’ll teach you the skills needed to make professional videos. Equipment is provided or bring your own. All students who attend the workshop will be able to record and produce videos for NZ all summer long.


DJ Camp, June 25 - 29

June 25 – 29, 1-4:30 pm, COST: $225

In the NZ DJ summer camp, participants learn to use turntables and
controllers as musical instruments. Teens explore the culture, history,
innovations, and aesthetics of hip-hop, EDM, turntablism, radio, and mash-up.
Teens who attend the week-long DJ camp will have hands on experience deep
diving into the culture and life of a DJ. Participants will learn the basics of DJing
and turntablism starting with beat matching and scratching techniques using
vinyl, controllers, and DVS systems such as Serato and Traktor. Additionally,
teens will be have the ability to learn VJ’ing and how to compose and perform
video DJ sets with a full day of A/V & VJ workshops and hands-on training
demonstrated in a live performance on the last day.


Digital Photography, June 25 - 29 & July 23 - 27

Session 1: June 25-29, 1 pm – 4:30 pm, COST: $225
Session 2: July 23-27, 9 am – 12:30 pm, COST: $225

Learn to photograph the world around you. Beginning and advanced photographers are welcome. Learn the basics of how to operate a camera and compose photos. Ann Arbor will be our inspiration while we hike and shoot pictures. Bring your own camera, smartphone,  or  NZ has some cameras available to share.


Murals Meets Street Art, July 9 - 13

July 9 – 13, 9 am – 12:30 pm, COST: $225

NZ will expose you to murals and street art from around the world, focusing on the impact these works make on individuals and communities. You will learn the basic concepts of public mural making. Then, you’ll collaborate to design and paint a community mural. All skill levels welcome. Bring paint clothes.


Music Technology, July 30 - Aug 3

July 30 – Aug 3, 9 am – 4:30 pm, COST: $295

Learn the basics of a music-recording studio. NZ provides electronic music workstations for beatmaking and recording arts featuring Maschine, Reason, Garageband, Logic Pro and ProTools software, and a full recording studio. Featured workshops include music recording, mixing, and editing, as well as ample time for music creation and collaboration with other artists.  Please bring a sack lunch each day.


Mosaics, July 30 - Aug 3

July 30 – Aug 3, 9 am – 12:30 pm, COST: $225

Work with mixed media: glass, ceramic and tile to design and create beautiful color creations.  You will learn basic mosaic art techniques from assembling to grouting the finished piece.  Attendees will design a creation of their own. Be imaginative and explore mosaic making with us.


DuneZone Camping Trip, Aug 14 - 18

Aug 14, 8am – Aug 18, 4pm, COST: $425 (Space Limited)

We will explore Nordhouse Dunes and Ludington State Park in this backwoods camping experience. We will hike a few miles every day, camp on the sand dunes, learn wilderness survival techniques, and have a great time chilling at the beach. We will also be offering nature-based arts programming, partly tailored to the interest of each teen. No camping experience is required, but teens should be prepared for some physical challenge and to help out around the camp. We will meet before the camp begins to pack as a group, and to help find equipment for teens who need it.
