Circles: A Guidebook for Schools and Youth-Serving Programs
About: This guidebook is intended for schools and youth-serving programs who want to implement “circles” as a way to build community, dialogue, improve teaching and learning, and respond to challenging situations. Circles are the foundational strategy in settings that embrace restorative practices. In a circle students and staff experience a strong sense of community. Circles intentionally lifts barriers between people, opens the possibility for connection, collaboration, and cultivates mutual understanding. In a circle, students develop various communication skills. They grow confidence in presenting their own ideas and thoughts, they learn to actively listen, develop important collaboration skills and increase empathy for one another.
This guidebook explores the rationale for circles, provides a history of the origins of circles, offers a number of structures and strategies for implementing circles, and outlines the important guidelines for running effective circles.
